Nintendo officially revealed a brand new Star Fox game during a surprise Nintendo Direct this week, marking the franchise’s first major return in nearly a decade. The game, simply titled Star Fox, is launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.
The reveal completely caught fans off guard. Nintendo announced the Direct just ten minutes before it went live, instantly sending social media into chaos as longtime fans realized Fox McCloud was finally back. Across Reddit and gaming communities, reactions exploded with classic quotes like “Do a barrel roll!” The announcement was made personally by legendary Nintendo designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi, adding even more weight to the moment.
According to Nintendo, the new game is heavily inspired by Star Fox 64, but this is much more than a simple remaster. The game features completely rebuilt visuals, redesigned character models, expanded story moments, new cinematics with fully voiced dialogue, a sweeping orchestral soundtrack, and additional gameplay sections that were not present in the original Nintendo 64 release. Stage layouts remain faithful to the original, but everything around them has been rebuilt from the ground up.
The classic on rails space combat is still here, with players piloting the Arwing through massive dogfights across the Lylat System. Nintendo also confirmed the return of vehicle transformations, Landmaster tank combat, Blue Marine underwater missions, and branching mission routes similar to the original game. A new Challenge Mode lets players replay cleared stages with brand new objectives on Normal or Expert difficulty.
One of the biggest surprises from the Direct was the addition of new multiplayer features. Battle Mode features 4v4 online dogfights, splitting players between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf across three dedicated stages. The game also supports Nintendo’s GameChat feature, letting players appear as Fox, Falco, Peppy, or Slippy through their camera during multiplayer sessions — with AR filters that actually move when you talk. Mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2 were also shown during gameplay footage for solo campaign play.
The announcement also comes shortly after Fox McCloud appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which many fans now believe was Nintendo quietly teasing the franchise’s return months in advance.
Star Fox launches June 25, 2026 exclusively for Switch 2. The digital version is priced at $50 and the physical edition at $60, requiring at least 14GB of storage for the digital download.
