The Helldivers 2 community is once again turning against the game, with recent Steam reviews dropping to “Mostly Negative” as frustration continues to build around Arrowhead Game Studios’ balancing decisions.

While controversy surrounding the Exo Experts Warbond and a recent developer AMA added fuel to the fire, many players say the real issue has been building for months: constant nerfs to player weapons and stratagems combined with increasingly aggressive enemies.
For a large portion of the community, Helldivers 2 was at its best when it embraced chaotic co-op fun and overpowered moments. Players loved experimenting with powerful builds, wiping out massive enemy hordes, and barely surviving insane situations with friends. But over time, many feel Arrowhead has slowly chipped away at that formula.
Several updates have reduced the effectiveness of fan favorite weapons, vehicles, and loadouts, while enemies have become tankier, more overwhelming, or simply more frustrating to deal with at higher difficulties. What many players once viewed as challenging chaos is now increasingly being described as exhausting and restrictive.
The recent Exo Experts Warbond only intensified those complaints. While Warbonds have generally been well received since launch, some players were frustrated by vehicle related content being tied to paid unlocks at a time when much of the community already felt the core gameplay experience was becoming less enjoyable.
Arrowhead chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt also faced backlash following a recent AMA, where some players felt the studio appeared disconnected from long standing community concerns surrounding balance changes and gameplay direction.
In response to the criticism, Arrowhead released a statement promising clearer patch notes, public beta testing for future updates, new progression systems beyond Level 150, and additional exosuit stratagems obtainable outside of paid Warbonds. The studio also teased larger Galactic War events and deeper campaign content arriving later this summer.
However, many players remain skeptical. Across Reddit, Steam, and Discord, fans continue compiling lists of unresolved bugs, unpopular balance adjustments, and frustrations with the game’s overall direction. Some longtime players argue that Arrowhead has spent too much time trying to balance the fun out of the game instead of embracing the chaotic power fantasy that helped make Helldivers 2 one of the biggest multiplayer successes in recent years.
Despite the backlash, Helldivers 2 still maintains a massive active player base more than two years after launch. That continued popularity is exactly why the criticism has become so intense. Most of the people voicing frustration are not casual critics looking for something to hate. They are dedicated players who want the game to feel as fun and rewarding as it did during its peak.
Arrowhead has recovered from community backlash before, and many players still believe the studio can turn things around again. But for now, the fight for Super Earth is being overshadowed by a growing battle between the developers and the very community that helped turn Helldivers 2 into a phenomenon.
