PlayStation 6 Could Cost Over $1,000 as RAM and Storage Prices Continue to Surge

Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 could reportedly launch with a price tag exceeding $1,000, as rising hardware costs continue to impact the gaming industry. According to prominent hardware leaker KeplerL2, the console’s RAM and NAND storage alone could cost Sony more than $680, excluding essential components such as the processor, graphics hardware, and cooling system. The leaker previously estimated that the PS6’s total bill of materials could approach $1,000, raising concerns about how much consumers may ultimately have to pay for Sony’s next console.

The potential price increase comes amid a broader surge in gaming hardware costs, with manufacturers struggling against rising memory prices and growing demand from artificial intelligence data centers. Valve has already raised the price of its Steam Deck OLED, with the 512GB model climbing from $549 to $789 and the 1TB version jumping from $649 to $949. Sony has also increased prices across its existing PlayStation lineup, with the standard PS5 now retailing for $649.99 and the PS5 Pro reaching $899.99 in the United States. Microsoft has faced similar pressures, raising the Xbox Series X’s price to $800 for the disc-based model.

The situation highlights a growing affordability problem across the gaming industry, where hardware prices are rising even as current-generation consoles continue to age. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana recently warned that the American console market is facing significant challenges, pointing to declining hardware sales and record-high average selling prices. According to Circana’s figures, U.S. PlayStation hardware unit sales were down 25% year over year through August 2026, while Xbox hardware sales declined 33%. With memory shortages and manufacturing expenses continuing to pressure console makers, the next generation could become considerably more expensive than previous launches.

Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6’s specifications, release date, or retail price, meaning the reported figures remain unverified estimates rather than confirmed manufacturing costs. Although console manufacturers have historically absorbed some hardware expenses to encourage software sales, Sony has indicated that it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. If component prices remain elevated, the company may face difficult decisions about the PS6’s specifications, profit margins, and eventual retail pricing. For consumers, the possibility of a four-figure PlayStation raises a larger question about whether next-generation gaming hardware is becoming increasingly unaffordable.
