A previously unseen trailer reportedly showcasing the canceled Mass Effect 5 has surfaced online, just one day after Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare. The footage, allegedly created using in-engine pre-production assets, reveals what appears to be a project titled Mass Effect: Universe. The cinematic trailer features futuristic combat, biotic abilities, and a mysterious new protagonist, alongside what appears to be returning fan-favorite character Liara T’Soni. However, the trailer’s authenticity has not been independently verified, and EA has yet to confirm whether the footage is genuine.
Originally announced in 2020, Mass Effect 5 was intended to continue BioWare’s acclaimed science-fiction RPG franchise following Mass Effect: Andromeda. Although official details remained limited throughout development, previous teasers suggested connections to the original trilogy, including the possible return of familiar characters and locations. The upcoming installment was expected to build upon the franchise’s signature combination of cinematic storytelling, player-driven decisions, character relationships, and intergalactic exploration. The newly leaked footage offers a possible glimpse into the direction BioWare had envisioned for the next chapter.
Unfortunately, the project has now been canceled following Electronic Arts’ decision to shut down BioWare after more than three decades of game development. Announced on October 21, 2026, the closure comes amid a broader restructuring at EA, which reportedly includes approximately 400 layoffs and the cancellation of several projects. EA confirmed that the next Mass Effect was still in early development and would not move forward as the company shifts resources toward other major franchises. The decision brings an abrupt end to nearly six years of anticipation for the sequel, leaving the future of the Mass Effect video game franchise uncertain.
