Phasmophobia’s Major Character Overhaul Is Live — The Modding Community Is Already Going Wild

Phasmophobia received one of its biggest updates in years on May 5, introducing a complete player character overhaul with new customization options, upgraded models, and fresh animations for players across all platforms.

The update adds redesigned character models alongside expanded cosmetic customization, including hairstyles, clothing, accessories, and unlockable cosmetics earned through gameplay. For a game that has been running since 2020, the overhaul gives Phasmophobia a noticeably more modern presentation and refreshes the experience for longtime players.

But one of the biggest reasons the update has generated excitement is what it could mean for the modding community.

Major character overhauls like this often rebuild the systems underneath the game itself, giving modders far more flexibility to create custom content. With expanded cosmetic slots, upgraded player models, and improved animation systems now in place, many players believe the update could open the door for significantly more advanced mods in the future.

Within days of the update going live, modders had already started experimenting with the new framework. Community creators have begun working on custom cosmetics, character edits, and visual modifications, with many expecting larger projects to follow over the coming months.

The possibilities are what have many fans excited. Modders could potentially create custom horror themed outfits, movie inspired skins, meme characters, entirely new cosmetic packs, improved first person animations, and even deeper gameplay overhauls built around the new systems. While Phasmophobia’s modding scene has always been active, the new character framework gives creators much more to work with than before.

If you have not revisited Phasmophobia recently, this update is one of the best reasons to jump back in. Developer Kinetic Games has already confirmed multiple major updates are still planned throughout 2026, including map reworks, new events, and the long awaited Horror 2.0 overhaul tied to the game’s eventual 1.0 release.
